When the two of you are worn thin

Prayers for a Struggling Marriage

A struggling marriage is a lonely place to stand, because the person you would normally lean on is the one things are hard with. These prayers are for that strange loneliness: for softening, for honest conversations, and for the long patience that rebuilding takes. God is not embarrassed by the state of your marriage, and He is not done with it.

A prayer for our struggling marriage

Father, our marriage is hurting, and we both know it. The silences are longer, the patience is shorter, and I do not remember exactly when that started. You joined us together, so I am asking You to hold us together. Do the mending that we have not managed on our own. Give us one honest, gentle conversation this week, and build from there. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A prayer to soften my own heart

Lord, it is easier to pray about my spouse’s faults than my own, so start with me. Show me where I have been proud, cold, or quick to keep score. Love suffereth long and is kind, and I have been neither lately. Forgive me, and soften what has gone hard in me. Let the change in this marriage begin on my side of the bed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A prayer to rebuild trust

Father, trust has been broken between us, and we both feel the wobble in everything now. Rebuilding feels slow and unglamorous, and some days I wonder if it is worth it. You restore years the locust has eaten, so I believe You can restore this. Give us both the honesty rebuilding requires, patience for the pace of it, and small proofs along the way that it is working. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A prayer for my spouse

Lord, I want to pray for my spouse without an agenda, which is harder than it sounds. Bless them today. Encourage them where they are worn down in ways they have not told me about. Draw them close to You, not so my life gets easier, but because You love them. And remind me of what I saw in them at the start, because it is still there. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

From Scripture

Verses for this prayer

“Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love described as verbs rather than feelings. In a hard season, this passage works as a checklist to pray through, starting with yourself.

“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.”
Colossians 3:13-14

Marriage runs on repeated forgiveness. The standard given is not fairness but the way Christ forgave you.

“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

The case for staying a team. The threefold cord has long been read as two people with God as the third strand.

“And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.”
1 Peter 4:8

Fervent love does not pretend faults away; it covers them, refusing to let every failure become the headline.

Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (KJV), public domain.

Common questions

Questions about this prayer

What if I am the only one praying for our marriage? +

Pray anyway. One praying spouse is not half a prayer; God hears you fully, and your own softening changes the daily weather of a marriage more than you might expect. Keep praying for your spouse with kindness rather than as a complaint list.

Should we get marriage counseling if we are praying about it? +

Prayer and counseling work well together. A good counselor is a practical means God often uses to answer exactly this prayer. Going to counseling is not a failure of faith; refusing every form of help might be.

What if my marriage is abusive? +

Get safe first. Prayer never requires you to remain in danger, and protecting yourself and your children is not a betrayal of your vows or your faith. Reach out to someone you trust, a pastor, a counselor, or a domestic abuse hotline, and let others help carry this.
