Prayers for Anxiety
Anxiety gets loudest right when you most need rest, and it rarely waits for a convenient moment to pray. You do not need the right words to begin; you only need honest ones. These short prayers are a starting place, and the verses beneath them are where they come from.
Father, my mind will not slow down. You see every worry I am carrying, the ones I can name and the ones that just sit heavy on me. You told me to cast my cares on You because You care for me, so I am handing them over now, one by one, even though my hands want to hold on. Quiet my thoughts the way You quieted the storm, and let Your peace stand guard over my heart and mind. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Lord, it is happening again. My chest is tight, my thoughts are racing, and I cannot think my way out of this. So I am not going to try. I am just going to say Your name and remember that You are here, in this room, in this moment. What time I am afraid, I will trust in You. Steady my breathing. Steady my heart. Stay close until this passes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Father, tomorrow feels like more than I can carry, and I have been living it over and over before it arrives. You told me not to take thought for the morrow, because You are already there. So I give You tomorrow: the conversation I am dreading, the news I am waiting on, the things I cannot control. Help me live inside today, where Your grace actually is. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Lord, the house is quiet but I am not. Night is when my worries feel biggest, and I am tired of meeting them alone in the dark. You do not slumber, so I do not have to keep watch. Take what I am holding, and hold it through the night for me. Let me lie down in peace and sleep, because You alone make me dwell in safety. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Verses for this prayer
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Paul’s answer to anxiety is not to pretend it away but to carry every request to God, and the promised result is peace that stands guard like a soldier.
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
One short sentence with the whole invitation in it: God wants your anxieties precisely because He cares about you.
“Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”
David wrote this while under real threat. The promise is not that the burden vanishes, but that God holds you up underneath it.
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
God’s remedy for fear here is His own presence: five promises in a row, each one beginning with what He will do.
Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (KJV), public domain.
Questions about this prayer
Is it wrong for a Christian to feel anxious? +
No. Scripture never scolds the anxious heart; it invites it. The Psalms are full of honest fear brought straight to God, and Jesus Himself sweat drops of blood in Gethsemane. Anxiety is not a failure of faith. Bringing it to God is faith.
What if I feel too anxious to focus while praying? +
Start small and honest. Even “God, help me” is a complete prayer. Many people find it steadying to pray Scripture aloud slowly, such as Philippians 4:6-7, and let the words do the focusing for them.
Does prayer replace getting help for anxiety? +
No. Prayer and practical help work together. If anxiety is disrupting your life, talking to a doctor or counselor is a wise and faithful step. Many people find God’s help arrives through both.
