Prayers for Sleep
There is a particular loneliness to being awake at 2 a.m. with a mind that will not stop. Scripture speaks tenderly to that hour: the God who keeps you neither slumbers nor sleeps, which means the night shift is covered. These prayers are for lying down, for waking in the night, and for handing over the thoughts that keep you up.
Father, the day is done, whether I am done with it or not. I hand You what happened and what did not, the words I said and the ones I wish I had. You watched over me today; watch over me tonight. I will both lay me down in peace and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Lord, my body is in bed but my mind is still at work, still in old conversations, still in tomorrow. You know each thought before I think it. So I stop chasing them and turn to You instead. You give sleep to those You love; I receive it as a gift I cannot earn or force. Slow my heart to the pace of Your keeping. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Father, I am awake again and the house is dark and quiet. Instead of fighting it, I will use this hour to pray. For the people I love: keep them. For the worries that woke me: take them. You who keep Israel neither slumber nor sleep, so nothing needs me on watch tonight. Let me rest in that, and if sleep returns, receive it from Your hand. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Lord, make my sleep sweet tonight, the way Your Word says: when thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid. Guard the door of my mind against fear and the replaying of the day. Whatever tomorrow holds, You are already in it, and You will meet me there in the morning. Goodnight, Father. I am safe with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Verses for this prayer
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.”
David’s bedtime verse, written amid real danger. Safety came from God’s presence, not from resolved circumstances.
“It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.”
A gentle correction to the anxious hustle: sleep is described as a gift God gives to those He loves, not a weakness.
“When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.”
The promise attached to trusting God’s wisdom: nights without dread, and sleep that is actually restful.
“He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”
You can sleep because God does not. The watch over your life continues all night, every night.
Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (KJV), public domain.
Questions about this prayer
What should I do when prayer does not put me to sleep? +
Prayer is not a sleep technique, and treating it like one adds pressure to the night. Pray to be with God, not to achieve sleep; many believers use wakeful hours for unhurried prayer. If sleeplessness is ongoing, talking to a doctor is wise as well. Rest is both a spiritual and a physical matter.
Is there a good short verse to pray in bed? +
Psalm 4:8 is loved for exactly this: “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.” Praying it slowly, phrase by phrase, gives a racing mind one calm track to follow.
