Prayers for a Sick Child

Nothing exposes a parent’s heart like a sick child. You would trade places with them in a second, and you cannot, and that helplessness is its own ache. These prayers are for fevered nights, doctor visits, and hospital rooms, prayed to the Shepherd who gathers the lambs with His arm.

A prayer for my sick child tonight

Father, my child is sick, and I am sitting here unable to fix it. You love this child even more than I do, which I can hardly imagine. Bring the fever down, ease the hurt, and give them rest tonight. Give me calm hands and a steady voice, so my worry does not become theirs. You who keep Israel without slumbering, keep watch over this little one. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A prayer for healing for my child

Lord Jesus, when You were here, parents brought their children to You, and You never once turned them away. So I am bringing mine. You know exactly what is wrong in this small body, even where the doctors are still working it out. Heal my child. Restore their strength, their appetite, their laugh. And let this sickness leave as quickly as it came. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A prayer for a parent’s fear

Father, I need to confess how scared I am. My mind keeps leaping to the worst endings, and I cannot love my child well from inside that fear. You said to Jairus, be not afraid, only believe, and I am asking You to say it to me. Is anything too hard for You? Nothing is. Hold my fear so my hands are free to hold my child. A prayer for a child in the hospital

Lord, this hospital room has become our whole world, and my child is so small in that bed. Thank You for every nurse and doctor caring for them; give those workers wisdom beyond their training. You have heard my prayer and seen my tears, just as You saw Hezekiah’s. Bring healing, bring discharge papers, and bring us home. Until then, stay in this room with us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Spoken to a father whose daughter was gravely ill. Jesus addresses the parent’s fear before He does anything else.

“He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.”

Isaiah 40:11

The lambs get carried closest. God’s special gentleness is for the smallest of the flock and for the ones raising them.

“Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord.”

2 Kings 20:5

God’s answer to a desperate sickbed prayer. He mentions the tears as well as the words; both were seen.

“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?”

Jeremiah 32:27

A question meant to be answered while looking at your hardest circumstance. The God of all flesh includes your child’s small body.

Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.”

Jesus was indignant when children were kept from Him. He took them in His arms; He receives the ones you bring Him still.

Questions about this prayer

How do I pray with my child when they are sick? +

Short and warm beats long and formal. A hand on their forehead and a sentence like “Jesus, please help this hurt and help us sleep” teaches a child more about God than a polished prayer would. Let them hear that God is safe to talk to when things are bad.

Why would God let my child get sick? +

Scripture does not hand out tidy explanations for each illness, and beware of anyone who does. What it does insist on is that God is near the brokenhearted, that children are precious to Jesus, and that sickness is part of a broken world He has promised to mend. It is okay to bring God the why as a question rather than settle it.

Does praying mean I should wait before calling the doctor? +

No. Call the doctor, and pray on the way. Medical care for your child is part of how God answers, not competition for your faith. If your instincts say something is wrong, acting on them is good parenting and good stewardship.
