The night before surgery is long, and the waiting room the next day can be longer. Whether you are the one on the table or the one watching the clock, these prayers are for the hours when everything is out of your hands and in God’s.

A prayer before a loved one’s surgery

Father, someone I love is going into surgery, and I cannot go with them past those doors. But You can, and You will. Preserve their going out and their coming in. Steady the hands of every surgeon and nurse in that room, and let every decision be the right one. While I wait, keep my imagination from running to dark places. Bring them back to me safely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lord, tomorrow is the day, and tonight my mind will not stop rehearsing it. You said I could lie down and my sleep would be sweet, so I am asking for that mercy now. Lord, the surgery is over, and now comes the slow work of healing. Knit together what was opened. Ease the pain, guard against every complication, and give patience for the days when recovery feels slower than it should. Thank You for bringing us this far. What should I pray while I wait during someone’s surgery? +

Keep it simple and keep it going. Pray for the patient by name, for the hands of the surgical team, and for your own peace while you wait. Many people find it steadying to pray one verse slowly, such as Psalm 121:7-8, each time the fear rises.

Is it wrong to be afraid before surgery if I have prayed about it? +

No. Fear before surgery is a human response, not a failed prayer. Scripture says “what time I am afraid, I will trust in thee,” which assumes the fear will come. You can be frightened and faithful in the same hour.

Should I pray for the doctors too? +

Yes. God ordinarily heals through means, and skilled hands are one of them. Praying for the surgical team is not a lesser prayer than praying for a miracle; it is asking God to work through the help He has already provided.
